G. Puccini – Messa di Gloria
The Gracious image of Sveta Gora Queen of Heaven, the work by Venetian painter Jacopo Palma Senior, was gifted to the Sveta Gora church in 1544. 300 years ago, in 1717, Vatican decorated the image with a golden crown, acknowledging the special meaning and the miraculous reputation it has for the faithful.
This will be commemorated with tumultuous masterpiece by Richard Strauss (1864 – 1949), who continued the excessive music style in orchestration and harmony set by Richard Wagner. This can be heard also in Festliches Präludium, op. 61, which is a shorter classical work, but no less full in its sound. It was written in 1913 for the grand opening of Vienna Konzerthaus. The music piece itself is grandiously openede by the organ with a string of mighty chords, which pass into brass fanfare, interchanging with the motif in strings.
The centre of the concert will be Messa di Gloria, lesser known as Messa a quattro voci, musical piece for a symphony orchestra, mixed choir and soloists tenor and baritone. 22-year-old Giacomo Puccini (1858 – 1924) wrote the mass as his diploma thesis at L’Istituto Musicale Giovanni Pacini. The musical piece shows Puccini’s ingenuity despite his youth and he reused motifs from the mass in his other works. The first performance was in 1880, however, despite public’s positive response it was not performed again until 1952, after the work’s first publication by Puccini’s heirs.
